Whitewater SUP Owyhee river

The Owyhee River in Oregon - a raft and SUP adventure

April 15, 2019// Leave a comment

Spring time in Idaho means one thing to us rafters:  Desert River Trips!! But these desert rivers only flow when we get a decent snow pack, and this year we scored big-time.

While the ski hills are still open, many of us paddlers have been salivating at the thought of getting in our first overnight trips. With flows looking good, this would be the season to float the eastern Oregon desert river, the Owyhee.

The Owyhee is a big enough river for rafters, so having support is extra bonus for those of us that SUP- not only will we not have to carry our gear, but we will eat and drink like kings. The section we like is a class 3 run from Rome to Birch Ck, this is a great 3-4 day trip with many challenging rapids and lots of swimming. Each day brings different challenges, this trip we mostly had downstream wind, yes wind not breeze- but downstream is better than up.

Having spent a few years paddling bigger water our group usually has at least one clean run on all the rapids we encounter, while we always cheer each other on- we all love a train wreck,as long as nobody gets hurt.

On this trip we used the Salamander Shredder and Ensatina Whitewater SUP boards. We designed these boards to perform great for whitewater Stand up paddling and surfing. For the camping set up, we used the Salamander Camp Table, which is made to be really stable for preparing meals at camp. For our fire, we used our own Fire Pan that we sell through our site and through our dealer network.
